Can I keep my number when I switch to VoIP?

By the VoIPer team ยท Updated 3 October 2026

Yes. Most UK landline and non-geographic numbers can be moved (ported) to a VoIP provider, so customers keep calling the number they know.

How porting works

  1. You tell your new provider which numbers you want to move and who the current provider is.
  2. Your new provider requests the port. You may need a recent bill and the account holder’s details to match exactly.
  3. A switch date is agreed. Your current service keeps working until then.
  4. On the day, calls start arriving on your new system.

How long does it take?

Simple single-number ports usually take a couple of weeks. Multi-line and ISDN numbers can take longer. While you wait, we can set up your new system with a temporary number so you are ready on day one.

Avoid delays

  • make sure the name and address match the current provider’s records exactly
  • do not cancel your old service before the port completes, or the number could be lost
  • list every number, including fax and alarm lines you want to keep

Numbers that cannot always be ported

Some numbers tied to specific services, and some mobile numbers, follow different rules. We will check before anything changes.
