The UK’s traditional phone network (the PSTN) and ISDN lines are being switched off, with the national deadline set for January 2027. After that, phone calls will run over digital internet connections. If your business still uses copper phone lines, you need a plan before your line is migrated.
What is being switched off?
The PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) is the copper-based network that has carried UK phone calls for decades. ISDN, the digital version many offices used for multi-line phone systems, is going too. Openreach is moving everyone onto all-digital connections, and new copper phone lines are no longer sold.
When does it happen?
The original deadline was December 2025. It was extended to January 2027 to give vulnerable customers and businesses more time. Areas are migrated in stages, so your line could be moved before the final date.
What it affects
- Phone lines and old phone systems that plug into a copper line or ISDN.
- Alarm systems and lift lines that dial out over a phone line.
- Card payment terminals that still use a phone line rather than broadband or mobile data.
- Fax machines and franking machines.
- Broadband that relies on a phone line (ADSL and some FTTC services).
What to do now
- List every line you pay for and what it is used for. Old lines often support a single alarm or card machine nobody remembers.
- Check your broadband. A digital connection such as SOGEA or full fibre will carry your calls.
- Move your calls to VoIP. You can keep your existing numbers. See keeping your number when you switch.
- Talk to alarm and card machine suppliers about digital-ready replacements.
Can I keep my phone system?
Sometimes. If you have a newer on-site phone system, SIP trunks can connect it to the internet. If it is old or expensive to maintain, a cloud VoIP phone system is usually the simpler move.
