Most UK businesses pay a monthly fee per user for VoIP, typically from around £10 to £30 per user a month, plus optional handsets. At VoIPer, plans start at £9.99 per user a month plus VAT.
What you pay for
1. Monthly user licences
Each person (or desk) on the system needs a user licence. Cheaper plans include fewer minutes and features. Higher plans add things like call queues, wallboards and CRM integration. Our current plans:
- Basic, £9.99 a month: 500 minutes, voicemail, HD calling and music on hold.
- Premium, £14.99 a month: 1,000 minutes, mobile and desktop apps, menus, click to dial and video calling.
- Enterprise, £29.99 a month: unlimited minutes, caller ID routing, CRM integration, call queuing and wallboard statistics.
All prices exclude VAT.
2. Phones and headsets (optional)
You can use the free apps on computers and mobiles, so handsets are optional. IP desk phones are a one-off cost, and good headsets make a real difference for people on the phone all day.
3. Numbers
Existing numbers can usually be moved across. New local, 0800 or 03 numbers add a small monthly fee. See business phone numbers.
4. Call charges
Most plans include UK minutes. Calls beyond the allowance and international calls are charged per minute.
5. Broadband
You need a reliable connection. If yours is not up to the job, budget for a business broadband upgrade.
How VoIP compares with a traditional system
A traditional phone system means buying hardware, paying for line rental on each line, and paying an engineer for changes. With VoIP there is no box to buy, line rental disappears, and changes are made online, so most businesses spend less, even before counting the time saved.
Watch out for
- long contracts that are hard to leave
- “free” handsets paid for by higher monthly fees
- set-up or porting fees that are not mentioned up front
- call charges outside the bundle
